OMG HOLY TEGO!


Just as the picture asks, is he obsessed? I noticed this from before and so I investigated it. I ended up with over 18 pictures, and at least 3 performances where he wears a rosary around his neck. Why does he do this? I do not know. Maybe he thinks it’s cool. But, to some people, it is just bizarre. You see, I was born and raised Roman Catholic ( before I turned agnostic)  and I grew up revering the ROSARY as a Sacred Object.  We do not treat it as a fashion accessory – however, this is Japan and though there is a community of Catholics there, they are mostly Zen Buddhists and do not know the significance of the rosary. 

So I gave it some thought, and I investigated when he started doing this. I came up with he started doing this in 2006 and still does it up to the present. Though he does take it off in some photoshoots, Tego-nyan still wears it in most of them. It got me inspired to write this drabble and provide you with a HOLY TEGO Picspam. ENJOY!

PERFORMANCE #2: SUNADOKEI MU

Title: Holy Tegoshi!
Fandom: NEWS/ Tegoshi Yuya/ Shigeaki Kato
Genre: Crack/ Drabble
Rating: PG

It was another NEWS Photoshoot, just one of the many that the boys do for magazines. Today it was Myojo and Shigeaki Kato sat across Tegoshi Yuya while they were put on stand by.  Tegoshi was talking about fashion, he was telling Shige about this new look he saw in a French Fashion Magazine and that he wanted to copy it. But Shige was only half-listening, his thoughts wandered off to other things as he let his eyes wander as well. Out of the corner of his eyes, a shiny object caught light and grabbed his attention. Shige turned to his friend for a better look and saw that it was Tegoshi Yuya’s necklace – a rosary.

Shige cocked his head.Tegoshi had been wearing that for a little under a year now, and he had always wondered why. Did Tegoshi not know the meaning of the item? Did he not know that the string of beads that he wore on his neck was a holy symbol and revered by many as something sacred? Yet, he was using it as a fashion item and not for prayer.

“What are you staring at?” Tegoshi asked his friend who was just looking at him. “Is there something on my face?”

“Ne, Yuya, I have been meaning to ask you this for a long time now,” Shige started as he pointed to the prayer beads around the boy’s neck. “Why are you wearing a rosary?”

Tegoshi fingered his necklace and cocked his head. “You know, I never really thought about it,” he admitted. “I guess I thought it was cool or something.”

“Did you know that  people use them for prayer and not as fashion items?”

“Well… I just thought it was something nice, I never really gave it any thought,” Tegoshi was now pouting. Trust Shige to give him insight on things. Now, he was thinking if some of the fans were offended by his wearing it. “I thought some people wear it, isn’t it the same as wearing a cross?”

“Some people do wear them, but I think they are only holy people,” Shige said thoughtfully as his knowledge of Catholicism is limited.

“So does this mean I am holy?” Tegoshi said with a sly smile.

“Hardly,” Shige laughed. “People also wear it to ward off evil, I saw them in movies using it to exorcise demons and vampires. You’re not warding off any evil or trying to ward off vampires, are you?”

“Yes, I am,” Tegoshi replied with a grin.

“You are?”

“Yup!” Tegoshi winked. “I’m trying to repel Massu. He bites!”

Shige closed his eyes and dropped his head on the table, trying to erase the mental image that popped into his head. “I don’t want to know,” he said repeatedly as he hit his head on the table once again.

  23. cant help not to comment.. hehe really nice topic and didn’t realized much that he was wearing one…
    ok i am raised and still Roman Catholic until now.. so yeah… I as well would wear a rosary as a fashion accessory at certain times and as long as it suits in my get-up… and its not a big deal unless the rosary is blessed… well thats how I see it.. as long it is not yet blessed its ok for it to be used as an accessory… not only rosary i used at times.. well also the rosalette and this one necklace that was given to me by a nun way back… but the necklace was blessed and would use it often with the thought that it would keep me away from harm but thats another story LOL… anyways, with the rosary as long as it is not blessed its OK…

      1. haha i understand we all have our own styles.. with me tho I just started doing and using it when I learned that it can be used as long as it is not blessed.. haha yeah… [^^;] tho they say its weird but then heck i care cause its my style.. LOL… I mean I even went to church one time with a rosary hanging in my neck.. they would just look and stare and thought I was a tourist when every week i would go there.. XD LOL.. but i just ignore them… symbolism i know but i feel that as long as you’re not doing anything bad with it i think its ok…
        and lastly i didnt get you when u said that “i see where you are coming from”… LOL.. i really didn’t got that.. [^^;]

  33. I thought he could have just been wearing a pendant but its an actual rosary!!
    It somehow suits him…. Where in the world did he get such a big rosary? Me and my classmates have all tried actually wearing it around our necks but it can’t even get pass our heads.
    Maybe he got it from the set in Shissou or something ^_^, although that wouldn’t make a lot of sense.

  51. Being a Catholic, I was actually bothered by it for quite sometime. I shrugged it off because I realized I only control JE boys in fanfiction it was Tego.

    i’m a roman catholic myself, so i was really wondering whether the boys know that it’s a religious ornament. well, it’s the trend over there, weird huh?
    but actually if you look closely, it’s not really a proper one (?)
    like here it’s pretty close-up, it’s not the 10-1-10 arrangement, right? (all the rosaries that i have are either 10-1-10 or the small 10-1. do you get my meaning? i can’t explain very well)
    EEE? *scratch head* now i’m confused. in another pic the arrangement differs slightly –>here (i’m just linking your pics XD)
    maybe they changed the bead array before selling?

    1. I’m sure they are very aware. Actually, Christianity (I am a Christian too) is not the only religion to use rosaries, or prayer beads. It has been used for thousands of years in the Buddhist tradition. It is used as a way to pray and repeat mantras, and be able to keep track of the count. This is common knowledge among anyone who grows up in the Orient, such as myself (in Taiwan).
      And besides, nothing we do as traditions in Christianity is really original anyway. Most of it is taken from already existing rituals, and it is the faith that matters.

        and you know waht youre right. I do believe more in spirituality over religion what matters is that you believe in something

  67. so…an idea just popped in my head..what IF tegoshi is catholic ?? i mean i have many japanese friends whoare catholic…im catholic and i asked my dad about this because i always wondered too…but he said unless its blesed its not very “holy” and you are free to wear it…but he also said that you kinda hav to be catholic/christian to wear one
    haha yea just wanted to share that ^^;;
