I have always observed similarities between protagonists of adventure stories. It always seems that the protagonist/ main character is the quirky guy who always fails to impress. Then they meet this person who would be their mentor and they are given a mission that could change the fate of the world or their lives. They doubt themselves and think that they could never do it, yet they push on. They go through all kinds of crazy hardships that could have made anyone throw in the towel but heroes never know when to quit. In the end of the story, the protagonist usually delivers and becomes not only the coolest guy in the story, but he is also revered for all eternity.
It happened to Frodo Baggins from the Lord of the Rings. It happened to Sawada Tsunayoshi from Katekyo Hitman Reborn. It happened to Harry Potter. It happened to Peter Parker. It could happen to you.
WAIT. WHUT?!
I am not going Professor X on you and bringing you to X-Men training. But I believe it can happen to anyone of us. I guess I have always wondered what is it that drives these heroes from being an ordinary person who lives the most ordinary life on Earth to risk their lives to finish the task that they were given to do? Perhaps, it could be genetics or innate in them that they really couldn’t help it. Maybe it is because they just want to get it over with – but one thing is for sure. They all made a choice. A conscious choice to accept the mission and finish it – whatever it is. THEY ARE THE MOST DRIVEN PEOPLE ON EARTH.
They accepted that they have a purpose to play in this world. They accepted the role of the hero and they committed to it whole heartedly. They went through the training. They went through all the challenges. They fought the enemies. They also changed themselves – all for the sake of finishing what they have to do. They completely gave themselves up for the mission so they could save themselves and the world.They are focused. They are suddenly driven to push forward. They need to keep going so they could get to the point where they could say “MISSION ACCOMPLISHED” and go back to living the life they want.
But little do they realize that once they are granted the power, there is no turning back anymore. They are changed completely and nothing will ever be the same again. They have been reborn.
I guess the reason why I said that the fantasy story could happen to us is because I believe that we are called to be all Heroes for the Lord. He has made us for a purpose and once He makes that purpose known to us, we need to take that purpose, that challenge, no matter how hard it is and transform ourselves from ordinary people to Heroes who will finish the task that He has given us.
It could be as small as helping a friend out, or as big as finding the cure for cancer, but I believe that God has equipped us with power, with might and with knowledge with his Holy Spirit so that we can succeed with our mission here on earth. However, whether we choose to accept the mission or not is up to us.
If we don’t accept the mission, we are left to live our life in boring complacence, but if we choose to accept the mission, the adventure starts. Our life changes dynamically. We experience new challenges each day. We are equipped with power. We are given the tools we need to finish the mission.
And no one said it would be a cake walk, we have to persevere until the end to finish it. Frodo, though he almost quit halfway his mission still persevered and battled with all forces (even himself) to bring the ring to Mordor to be destroyed. Tsuna (for the more anime minded people), though he didn’t want to be the 10th Boss of Vongola, took up the position and saved his family and his friends from trouble. They both had challenges, opposition and yet they persevered. It is because of their drive to get to the finish line that they succeed.
I believe that I am called to be a superhero for the Lord. I am called to be one of the Fellowship. I am called to do a mission for Him. I need to focus on the Training Manual and Mission Log ( The Bible) so that I could do what He asks of me when He does. I need to commit myself fully to preparing for my time to be called and be transformed into the Super version of Me. I don’t know what my big mission is, but I know that one day He will call me and give it to me.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:1-2)
